Get the Most From Your Therapy : A Guide For Everyone Kindle Edition 15 Amazon reviewsKat2025-07-21 Great guide for the beginning therapy client or someone considering therapy I would urge anyone beginning therapy or considering it, to read this book. The book is Indispensable for someone beginning therapy.I will hit on a few highlights in the book.He succinctly describes certain diagnoses, which are very helpful. And says that diagnoses are not as clear cut (or "important") as for an MD trying to determine what your chest pain means, or if you are definitely pregnant.I also liked Chapter 17--What-if Questions and Answers. An example of this is: "What if there's something I want to talk about, but I just can't?" There are a number of helpful "what-if" questions and answers in this chapter.I believe in in-person therapy so much more than telehealth, and I was glad Dr. McPhee spelled out the many pluses of in-person therapy. (Yes, I do know there are pluses with telehealth too, and that that is the only way some folks can have therapy.)One area of therapy I wish clinicians who write would address more is termination, especially when it is mutually agreed upon. Even the word to describe the ending of therapy is controversial. I think it is the perfect word to describe the death that occurs at therapy's end. There is grieving and loss. The term "closure," which Dr. McPhee uses (and says isn't quite right either) sugar coats the pain involved in leaving the unique bond between client and therapist. Dr. McPhee does address termination, just not as thoroughly as I'd like.I always appreciate a bit of humor and Dr. McPhee proves a therapist can have a sense of humor! This made the reading of this book most enjoyable. His list of further resources is also helpful.I would urge you to check out Dr. McPhee on Quora. He has great answers to questions, with his signature humor. Please, don't stop reading and learning about therapy with this book. Two books I particularly like are: "Someone to Talk To: What Really Happens in Therapy and How It Can Work for You," by Joyce Houser, MA, MFT; (2018) and "Inside Your Therapist's Mind: How a Psychotherapist Thinks, and Why It Works," by Drew E. Permut, PhD. (2012) Of course, both of these books are pre-COVID, which means, mostly, pre-telehealth. (And definitely before bots.) I believe these books hold up in 2025.Anne Marie Bedard2025-05-29 This Beautifully Welcoming Book Totally Demystifies Therapy "Get the Most From Your Therapy: A Guide For Everyone" by Dr. David McPhee is more than the definitive guide to the therapeutic process; it's a gem of compassion and simple wisdom that will help prospective therapy clients breathe easier as they navigate what can sometimes feel like a complex and daunting series of decisions. In the vein of Irvin Yalom, Dr. McPhee speaks with a voice of gentleness and good humor, effectively communicating the idea that therapy, rather than being intimidating, is at its best a warm and supportive human relationship.Through clear and readable explanations combined with examples taken from decades as a therapist, Dr. McPhee breaks down each step of the process, from choosing a therapist through termination of therapy, providing guidance on what to expect and how to work through questions or concerns that may arise, empowering readers to fully enter into therapy with confidence and hope. For therapists the book is an invaluable clinical resource, and most importantly a reminder that our work has less to do with "treating" our clients and more to do with meeting them where they are in a healing partnership based on acceptance, trust, and shared purpose. If you've ever wished that you could sit at the feet of a kind and knowing teacher and ask him everything you've always wanted to know, treat yourself to "Get the Most From Your Therapy," a treasure trove of insight, understanding, and reassurance.Holly Burt2025-05-13 loved it! Get the most from your therapy, by Dr David McPhee is a great book for anyone interested in therapy. It is entertaining and funny at times. The book helped me to understand, without a bunch of jargon, what a therapist is doing, what it’s like to be in therapy, and how to maximize my time! I’d like a therapist to suggest I read this book, so that they don’t need to explain what and why they do what they do. I would definitely recommend.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
