What topics are off limits in therapy sessions?

If your therapist prefers not to discuss something, they’ll gently steer the conversation in a different direction; we’re pretty good at that. These off-limits topics might include:

  • My political views, in this crazy current age
  • Other patients, past or present
  • My staff
  • My family (with certain exceptions)
  • Professional football, golf, or any other topic I don’t understand at all, even if raised as a way of creating a bond
  • Details of my social life
Anything the client wants to disclose about themselves is OK, though certain disclosures involving danger to self or others are reportable. Clients are thoroughly briefed on these before we begin.
